Keynote: Heard: Understanding How Introverted Students Learn and Lead
Are great leaders introverts or extroverts? It depends. Too often, however, we enable bold, dynamic talkers to take to our podiums. It’s time to empower those with quieter dispositions – who are more inclined to be charismatic connectors than charismatic orators – to assume leadership roles. We will explore the research that supports the case for quiet leadership and the most effective strategies for nurturing the power of quiet in our schools.
(1 hour in-person or remote presentation)

Heidi is a gifted speaker and scholar. There’s something in the way she is able to open an idea and take audience members on a journey, from known to unknown and back to known again that transforms and inspires. People walk away charged and ready to take action.”

Signature Workshop: Building Temperament-Inclusive Communities
We frequently define “participation” as quantity of speech, and assign a grade to the number of times kids raise their hands in our classes. Those who process information quickly are at an advantage under these conditions. Our schools tend to be noisy places where there is an expectation for constant social interaction. As one student exclaims, “You’re always expected to be doing something or going somewhere and are discouraged from spending time alone.”
To what extent does your community…
- Prize action and stimulation over deliberation and solitude?
- Favor bold talkers over reflective listeners as school leaders?
- Require members to engage in constant collaboration and work in open spaces?
In this interactive workshop, K-12/university educators begin by learning about the ways in which introversion and extroversion shape our identities and then take a deep dive into strategies for cultivating a diversity of leadership styles, rethinking classroom participation and unleashing the creative potential of mixed-temperament teams. Participants are encouraged to honor their own personality styles and step outside of their comfort zones in this design thinking – inspired workshop. Practical strategies and tools are provided.
(Half/full day in-person or remote event, or weekly/monthly remote series)

Being a part of the Quiet program has not only strengthened my awareness of the different needs of my students, but it has enabled me to create programs and share knowledge. Heidi is always ready to share resources and ideas, and she helps with practical applications in the classroom and for parent/teacher workshops.”
–Charlotte, Columbus School for Girls
Workshop for Teams: Stronger Together
How often do we ask our students and colleagues to work together in teams, but neglect to give them structures to leverage their strengths? This workshop will shed light on the power of mixed-temperament teams, which are more productive and innovative than less diverse ones but are often held back by misunderstandings and miscommunications. In order to capitalize on our differences, we first need to understand them in profound ways. The goal is to empower introverts and extroverts to work together effectively to unleash the creative potential of everyone at the table.

The Quiet program re-energized me to go back to care for the social and emotional well-being of students. We were introduced to introvert/extrovert training that helps put into place real pedagogy for teachers and reach those students whom we, unfortunately, sometimes miss.”

My coaching relationship with Heidi was nothing short of transformational for me. Our conversations supported me to develop confidence in my voice and in my ability to advocate for students. Simply put: I am a stronger teacher and individual as a result of the compassion and curiosity that are the foundations of Heidi’s coaching style.”
